{"id":16453,"date":"2026-03-15T13:42:00","date_gmt":"2026-03-15T13:42:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ddtp-pre.tecnicasreunidas.es\/tecnicas-reunidas-participates-in-the-chainergy-project-to-reduce-dependence-on-critical-raw-materials-and-strengthen-european-energy-autonomy\/"},"modified":"2026-06-04T09:58:37","modified_gmt":"2026-06-04T09:58:37","slug":"tecnicas-reunidas-participates-in-the-chainergy-project-to-reduce-dependence-on-critical-raw-materials-and-strengthen-european-energy-autonomy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ddtp-pre.tecnicasreunidas.es\/en\/tecnicas-reunidas-participates-in-the-chainergy-project-to-reduce-dependence-on-critical-raw-materials-and-strengthen-european-energy-autonomy\/","title":{"rendered":"T\u00e9cnicas Reunidas participates in the CHAINERGY project to reduce dependence on critical raw materials and strengthen European energy autonomy"},"content":{"rendered":"\t\t<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-post\" data-elementor-id=\"16453\" class=\"elementor elementor-16453 elementor-15388\" data-elementor-post-type=\"post\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a88b9ed e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"a88b9ed\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5955076d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5955076d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"s10\"><div class=\"s10\"><div class=\"s10\"><div class=\"s10\"><strong><span class=\"s9\">\u2022 <\/span><span class=\"s4\">CHAINERGY will research new materials and advanced processes for energy storage and generation, promoting the circular economy and the recovery of strategic resources.<\/span><\/strong><\/div><div class=\"s10\"><strong><span class=\"s9\">\u2022 <\/span><span class=\"s4\">The project is funded by the Center for Technological Development and Innovation (CDTI) and is supported by the Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Universities through the Science and Innovation Missions 2025 program.<\/span><\/strong><\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><p class=\"s7\">The main objective of the project is to develop sustainable technological solutions that reduce dependence on critical raw materials (CRMs) and advance toward a more resilient energy transition.\u00a0<\/p><p class=\"s7\">CHAINERGY was launched in response to the challenges posed by the<strong><span class=\"s4\"> <\/span>Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA)<\/strong>, adopted by the Council of the European Union (EU) in March 2024.\u00a0<\/p><p class=\"s7\">This regulation sets ambitious targets for 2030; including extracting at least 10% of critical raw materials within the EU, processing 40% locally, and recycling a minimum of 25%, thereby reducing dependence on third countries and strengthening European strategic autonomy.<\/p><p class=\"s7\">In this context, CHAINERGY aims to develop<strong> <span class=\"s4\">new active materials and devices for energy storage and generation<\/span>, promote <span class=\"s4\">phosphorus recovery processes<\/span><\/strong>, and improve <span class=\"s4\">recycling technologies for<\/span> end-of-life <span class=\"s4\">lithium-ion batteries<\/span>. All of this is done with the aim of maximizing the value of available resources, reducing dependence on scarce materials, and promoting circular economy models.<\/p><p class=\"s7\">CHAINERGY will investigate alternative materials\u2014such as<strong><span class=\"s4\"> magnesium and manganese silicides<\/span><\/strong>\u2014which are abundant, cost-effective, and have a low environmental impact, for the production of <span class=\"s4\"><strong>thermoelectric generators (TEGs<\/strong>)<\/span>, replacing bismuth, tellurium, or lead, which present economic, geopolitical, and environmental limitations. In this way, it will contribute to strengthening the EU\u2019s position in a technology that is fundamental to various industrial sectors, such as the automotive and aerospace industries, within a global market projected to exceed $1.4 billion by 2030.<\/p><p class=\"s7\">The project also focuses on new dry synthesis routes to develop <strong><span class=\"s4\">advanced battery materials<\/span><\/strong>, reducing waste generation and replacing critical materials, such as cobalt or lithium, with more readily available alternatives.<\/p><p class=\"s7\">As part of the CHAINERGY project, T\u00e9cnicas Reunidas will drive the development of technologies for <strong><span class=\"s4\">phosphorus recovery from sewage sludge and agro-industrial waste<\/span><\/strong>, generating high-value-added products that promote the circular economy and reduce geopolitical dependence on phosphorus, an objective considered strategic.<\/p><p class=\"s7\">In addition, CHAINERGY will develop <strong><span class=\"s4\">advanced technologies for safe disassembly and automatic sorting<\/span><\/strong>, using computer vision and computed tomography to efficiently and sustainably access the valuable materials present in batteries, which will improve recycling processes and traceability.<\/p><p class=\"s7\">CHAINERGY is led by the company HI IBERIA and includes the participation of T\u00e9cnicas Reunidas, Ferroglobe, Empresarios Agrupados, RIMSA, and AUTLAN. Several leading technology centers (LEITAT, CENIM, CIAE, and ICMM-CSIC) are also collaborating on the project, contributing complementary scientific expertise. The joint efforts of all these entities will ensure that the anticipated challenges are addressed comprehensively.<\/p><p class=\"s7\">The project will last four years and has a total budget of \u20ac5,264,910, to which T\u00e9cnicas Reunidas is contributing \u20ac1,222,876.\u00a0<\/p><p class=\"s7\">In summary,<span class=\"s4\"> <strong>CHAINERGY represents a strategic commitment for Spain and for the EU as a whole<\/strong><\/span>, as it will contribute to achieving a more sustainable, competitive, and resilient energy transition, based on innovation, the circular economy, and the
