ASTRA focuses on researching, developing, and validating a CO₂toCO conversion technology through the integration of electrolyzers into stack configurations within a single process unit, with the aim of achieving high conversion efficiencies at low capital and operating costs, reaching Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 5.

Descripción del proyecto:

The overall objective of ASTRA is the TRL 5 validation of a CO₂toCO conversion technology through the integration of electrolyzers into stacks within a single process unit. To achieve this objective, the project will follow the steps outlined below:

  • Research, development, and optimization of electrodes for CO₂ electrolysis
  • Research and characterization of anion exchange membranes (AEMs) and ionomers for CO₂ electrolysis under industrial operating conditions
  • Research and development of MEA preparation, assembly, and testing in CO₂AEM electrolyzers for CO production
  • Research on stack design for scaling up CO₂toCO conversion electrolyzers
  • Study of the effect of impurities and O₂ in the feed streams of CO₂ electrolyzers
  • Demonstration of the operation of a stable and efficient CO₂AEM electrolyzer stack under relevant industrial conditions (TRL 5)
  • Evaluation of the economic feasibility of the ASTRA technology through a technoeconomic analysis, and assessment of its application for the decarbonization of energyintensive industries
