Técnicas Reunidas participates in a research project for the development of Solid Oxide Electrolysis (SOE) technology for green hydrogen production.

  • The efiSOEC project investigates new green hydrogen production technologies that contribute to the decarbonization of the Spanish economy.
  • The project consortium, which includes TÉCNICAS REUNIDAS S.A., is led by REPSOL and also involves three other Spanish companies: TUBACEX S.A., EPOWERLABS S.L. and ZGR CORPORACIÓN S.A.
  • efiSOEC benefits from the contribution of five research organizations: Institut de Recerca en Energia de Catalunya (IREC), Centro Nacional del Hidrógeno (CNH2), DYPAM–University of Castilla-La Mancha, TECNALIA Research & Innovation, and CIDETEC.
  • The project was selected under the Missions Programme of the Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI), achieving the second-highest score in the 2022 call.

Descripción del proyecto:

The collaborative industrial R&D project entitled “Research and analysis for the development of an in-house SOEC technology for the generation of efficient hydrogen production systems”, with the acronym efiSOEC, has been funded by the Centre for Technological Development and Innovation (CDTI) and supported by the Ministry of Science and Innovation under the 2022 Missions Science and Innovation Programme call.
It is worth highlighting that this project, framed within the Missions Programme, achieved the second-best overall score among all projects submitted in the 2022 call.
The efiSOEC project aims to address the challenges posed by the decarbonization of energy-intensive industries through the development of national Solid Oxide Electrolysis (SOE) technology for the efficient production of renewable hydrogen, as well as the creation of the industrial ecosystem required for its commercialization. SOEC technology stands out for enabling green hydrogen production from renewable energies with higher efficiencies than low-temperature electrolysis, making it particularly suitable for industrial applications.
Within this project, which began in 2022, the performance of different materials, structures, and SOEC cell configurations is being analyzed with the objective of developing more efficient and resilient stacks that overcome the current limitations of the technology. The most industrially viable solutions will be scaled up and integrated into a modular system, which—following the analysis and implementation of the required balance-of-plant systems—will be characterized and validated according to previously identified industrial performance indicators.
In parallel, based on the results and solutions obtained, those enabling the scaling and industrialization of the system will be evaluated and identified, thereby facilitating rapid future deployment within the Spanish industry.
