The objective of the project is to develop a flexible technology that enables the recovery of manganese in hydrometallurgical plants in the form of a chemical species that maximizes its market value. The technology will be aimed at processes for the exploitation of zinc ores whose manganese content makes them unsuitable for processing using conventional zinc extraction technologies.

This objective will be addressed through two main approaches:

  • Selective recovery of manganese by precipitation.
    This methodology is aimed at recovering the manganese value present in zinc ores, resulting in an improvement in plant operating costs and reinforcing the competitive advantage of the ZINCEX™ technology.
  • Development of a hydrometallurgical process for the purification and production of a highpurity, highvalue manganese sulfate product, intended for use as an additive in electrolysis processes and as a raw material for the production of electrochemicalgrade manganese for battery manufacturing.

The hydrometallurgical process proposed in the project will offer the following advantages:

  • It will provide a competitive advantage to Técnicas Reunidas’ ZINCEX™ technology, enhancing its capacity to process zinc ores with high manganese content that cannot be exploited using conventional technologies.
  • It will increase exploitable zinc ore reserves. The recovery of manganese from these ores will improve operational profit margins and make the exploitation of these deposits more economically attractive.
  • It will improve the utilization of mineral resources, allowing the recovery of the manganese value contained in zinc ores that is currently lost as waste during effluent treatment processes.
